Large New Connections

• Your contact details and those of your company 

• Description of works required and how much electricity you're expecting to use 

• A plan showing the site location, layout and boundary, also highlighting the properties that need to be connected and meter positions 

• Any additional or abnormal electricity loads (heat pumps, swimming pools, etc.)  

• Details of any small generation installations, if applicable (solar panels, for example)  

• Dates of when you're ready for the works to be completed  

• Land ownership details (specifically land you own and where your boundary ends) as your connection may require land consent 

• A letter of authority from the landowner, tenant or occupier giving permission to the person, company or other third party applying for a connection offer on their land the legal right to act on their behalf

Letter of Authority

You need to provide us with the Building Network Operator (BNO) information. A BNO is the organisation that owns or operates the electricity distribution network within a multiple occupancy building, between the intake position and customers’ installations. A BNO may be a building owner, landlord, developer or similar function in control of a building infrastructure at that given time.

When you apply to us for a connection, you have the choice of keeping full control of your job or nominating one or more representatives to deal with us on your behalf. This includes nominating different people or companies to deal with us on a day-to-day basis for on-site works, or to manage or pay for the works. This ability to nominate different people has always been available and will remain to be available, but we want to make sure the scope and impact  of your options are clear to you.

If you ask for a quotation for connection, we will provide this within the following timescales from when you have given us all the information that we need: 

• Connections involving LV works – 25 working days

• Connections involving HV works – 35 working days 

• Connections involving EHV works – 65 working days 

Once the agreement is finalised and payment is received, we will schedule the work at a mutually convenient time. 

If you apply for a large generation or demand project, we will charge you for the costs associated with issuing the connection quotation in accordance with the Electricity (Connection Offer Expenses) Regulations 2018. You will need to pay a Connection Offer Expense regardless of whether you decide to accept your Quotation. Please visit our Connection Offer Expenses page for more information.

If you already have an existing electricity connection and need more power, you can increase the amount of electricity on your current connection. When you are completing the online application, under ‘Please tell us the type of works that your project requires’ select ‘Increase in Demand Load’.

There are a few things that could cause delays with your connection: 

Design Changes: If changes are needed to the design of the quote, either on your side or on our side, this can cause delays, so its best to give us all the information about the site when you first apply.

Site Readiness: If the site isn’t ready or the necessary arrangements haven’t been made on time, this can push things back. Your Project Manager can keep in contact with you throughout the process to ensure you have all the information to get the site ready on time. 

Material Lead Times: Some materials might take time to arrive. That's why it's a good idea to get in touch with us early to avoid any delays. 

Third Parties: Sometimes, other 3rd parties involved in the process can cause delays too but again its good to engage with us early to prevent this happening.  

Land rights: In order to provide you with a connection to our network, we need land rights to install, use, maintain and renew our equipment on privately owned land. Visit our land rights page to find out more about the land rights we can obtain on your behalf. 

Interactivity: Depending on where you are looking to connect to our network, it is possible that your connection offer could be made Interactive. ‘Interactivity’ happens when we receive more than one application making use of the same parts of the network, or where applications have a material effect on earlier applications. Interactivity means that the validity of one quotation is dependent on the outcome of the other. Click here for more information on the Interactivity process.

While we own the network, you do not have to accept a quote from us. There are other companies that can perform various aspects of the work, and you’re free to seek alternative quotes from Independent Connections Providers (ICPs).

If you have overpaid, we will process a refund. Refunds typically happen in the following situations: 

• When a customer cancels a project after accepting the Connection Offer 

• When a new connection is completed under budget, in which case the customer may be due a partial refund

Complaints

During your project, you may need to transfer the rights and obligations of your connection offer to a third party. This requires a legal document, called a Novation (SEPD - England & Wales) or Assignation (SHEPD - Scotland), signed by all parties. We’ve provided a guide and templates below. The documents are only complete once all three copies are agreed upon and signed.
