1-4 new electricity connections: What's involved?

You can apply by using our online application form. If you wish, you can also download and email your application to us here, however, the fastest way to apply is online. In the application form, we will outline everything we need from you.

Please note: In your application, you will be asked if you would like a formal quote or a budget estimate. If you are looking for a rough cost for the work you require, a budget estimate may be more suitable for your needs at this time.

Top tips for this stage: 

• Remember to tell us if you have anything that may require extra electricity such as heat pumps, swimming pools etc. You may hear us call this ‘abnormal load’ during your application.
• You will need to choose a supplier; this is who will pay your electricity bills to. They will also install your electricity meter after we install the cable up to where your meter will sit. You can find and compare suppliers on comparison websites such as Energy Which.
• You will also need an electrician to install your internal wiring and your consumer unit. Make sure the electrician has the right qualifications and certificates too.

The next stage is for our quoting team to look at the information you provided and build a quote for you. The team will look at this information and send you a quote with a breakdown of costs associated.

How long will you be waiting at this stage?

This depends on what you're requesting:

• If you've asked for a single new connection - we'll be in touch within 5 working days.
• If you've asked for 2-4 new connections, this will take us a little longer and we'll be in touch within 15 working days.

When you get in touch, we'll explain the costs and next steps for you if you wish to pay for the works to go ahead. This is also an opportunity for you to ask us any questions about your quote and anything else.

Top tips for this stage:

• Your price will vary depending on what you've asked for. For example, often, digging is needed for where we're going to lay the cables. If you ask us to do this, it's likely to be more expensive than it would doing it yourself or getting a tradesperson to do so.
• There are different ways you can pay, to find the best payment method for you, take a look at your quote.

Your quote will be valid for 90 days to give you enough time to make your decision. When you are ready, you can get things moving by paying for the quote. You can pay by card, bank transfer or cheque. Full details will be on your quote letter we send you.

Once you have accepted your quote and made payment, you will have a further 90 days for us to complete our works.

It's important that you do not make payment until you are ready for the connection to take place. If you're unsure on the right time to pay, please speak to us and we'll help you.

Top tips for this stage:

• Before you pay, if something doesn't look right in the quote we send you, or you have any questions - please do get in touch.

Once you've made payment, your personal Project Manager will be in touch within 5 working days. Your project manager will be your point of contact until the work is complete and are on hand to help you.

When we get in touch, we'll want to discuss preparation for the works. This includes any digging required on site, and a date for the work to be complete. Feel free to ask any questions you have at this point too.

Top tips for this stage:

• We will provide you with an MPAN (Meter point administration number) this is a unique number to your new connection. You'll need this when you choose a supplier to install your meter.
• If there is a need to access neighbouring land, we will need to seek approval from the landowner to carry out the works. If consent is difficult to gain, this may delay your project.
• We may need to get permits to carry out the works, for example from the local council for traffic management. Our Project Manager will organise this on your behalf and keep you updated.
• If you are carrying out your own digging on your land, please tell your tradesperson about where we've planned to put the cable using the plans we sent you. You can also give them our readiness guide for guidance on cable trenches, routes and depths.

The final step is completing the work and getting you connected. By this point, everything will have been organised between you and the project manager. Once this is done, we will arrive on-site and carry out the work to install your new electricity supply.

Top tips for this stage:

• Make sure you've arranged for your supplier and electrician to be there on the same day. They will need to install your meter and consumer unit. Not doing this will mean you won't have power until the meter and consumer unit is in place.
• Double check your quote, this will tell you if there's some equipment, we need you to provide (such as an external meter box). If you're unsure, our project manager can help.
